san francisco | down to earth.

contributed by jennie nunn

it's so pretty you'll want to live in it. it's a legacy. no, this isn't a major history museum, but the spanking new heath ceramics marketplace in the ferry building.

founded in 1948 by potter extraordinaire edith heath (and based in sausalito since 1959), the one and only san francisco location is luring locals and tourists alike. prods include clean-lined, gas-fired ceramic goods from teapots and mugs to cereal bowls. so be an earth mother and finish off your home styling with hues like matte brown, redwood, olive, and avocado. go out of this world with hybrid vases with martian-like bubble craters, made by ceramics pro adam silverman. in need of a last-minute gift? try graphic-printed organic cotton kitchen towels by heather moore, "little miss sunshine" pocket-sized books, limited-edition nesting bowl sets, and yummy white sage and wild mint teas by juniper ridge, all neatly displayed in a 500-square-foot space that puts your studio to shame. the design team behind the two-year-old LA store (commune) decked this one out with tables on casters, recycled kiln shells-turned-tile, and birch bookshelves with heath tile backsplashes. if you miss the ferry to tour the company's headquarters across the bay, watch live footage of the staff at work, on a mounted flatscreen in the shop.

come on in, it's good for your heath. heath ceramics. one ferry building. near the embarcadero. 415.399.9284. now open. www.heathceramics.com
