san francisco | crystal method.

contributed by candace abbott

hotel, motel, holiday inn? not gonna cut it. it's sparkling chandeliers and high thread-counts for you. find them at hotel shattuck, berkeley's boutique crash pad.

"berkeley" may conjure birks, dreads and tree hugs. but you won't find hippy chic here, just plenty of hip. the century old spot has undergone a major reno at the hands of this bay area dream team: arris architect thom jess, ziv davis design firm (think grand canyon skywalk) and histo guru, mark hulbert. the boys banded together for a good cause (how bay area of them) to create a vaulted foyer that keeps the peace (the sign hangs in the entrance). black molding, eclectic wallpaper and classic chandeliers drip elegance in the lobby. and the crystal ballroom? 2,800 feet of antique mirrors will have to do. still a nature freak? kick it in the courtyard or in your room with views of the golden gate. nosh on gourmet lamb hash at FIVE where chef scott howard dishes up local farm-to-table fare with a berkeley twist. biodynamic sips will surely keep you lifted. the mixers? fresh-squeezed juice only, natch.
