you thought volcanic activity didn't exist in these parts. but fab boutique hotels and culinary experiences erupting in long beach might just change your mind. try a new resto called fuego, natch, for proof.
hotel maya is not only the LBC's latest crash pad but it's now home to this super slick latin resto (and your next reason for a road trip). it's high time coastal eats went couture, no? you've heard the word "fuego" in the past, now you understand the meaning. it translates into 13-foot floor-to-ceiling glass panels (that open to the patio), a copper bar, authentic mexican tiles throughout, lush wooden furnishings and a vibrant palate that's as spicy and festive as it is cozy thanks to arya design. and you know what pairs best with this flavorful look: sauced up mexi cocktails, like horchata with spiced rum. sit back in a cozy red and white leather chair and let the vintage dumb-waiter deliver your tequila flight (private tequila tastings are also avail). remember to soak up all of that scenery (and sipping) with not-your-average-nacho-platter noshings. exec chef jesse perez serves up greatness in the form of lobster roast baja-style. perhaps duck 'al pastor' tacos, organic jalapeņo yellow corn maya fries or pepita-crusted wild salmon are more your style. but don't miss out on the savory barbacoa. sunday brunch plans? nothing says "buenos dias" like hibiscus lemonade and 360-degree views of the seaside harbor.
when you're hot, you're hot. fuego. at hotel maya. 700 queensway drive. long beach. 562.435.7676. now open. www.fuegolongbeach.com
