this is usually the month we mourn (or celebrate) the end of the winter culinary crop, but this year we're seeing the beginning a whole new growing season.

plant it.
remember the tiki-hut design and south beach-vibe at grass restaurant & lounge? it's back (pictured above), courtesy of chef-owner michael b. jacobs. fresh off a seven-year stint as a private chef, jacobs is clearly feeling as wild as a weed. his late-night american-asian dishes rely on sensuous textures and aromas as much as tastes. he will add, the king is dead (k.i.d.), a complementary indoor supper club, later this summer. 28 northeast 40th street. between north miami and second avenues. 305.573.3355 www.grasslounge.com

all you need is love.
ocean drive gets "spice art" with its first contemporay indian venue, ishq, meaning love. owners sham and kavita kamlani promise an open kitchen, a pair of tandoor ovens (one for bread, the other for proteins), a bar inlaid with semi-precious stones and a cozy community table that seats 14. we can feel the ishq already. opens late june. 530 ocean drive. at fifth street. 305.532.4747.

thanks to a blowhard.
christabelle's quarter answers the question: what good comes from a hurricane? scuttled by wind and water from the french quarter, chef-owner alex patout reinvents his digs - all 3 stories, 30-foot stained-glass ceiling and 40 chandeliers of it - in coconut grove. here, he also whips up (er, make that slow-cooks) his succulent louisiana crawfish étouffee, smothered roast duck and cajun short ribs. new orleans native patout says he's not unhappy katrina sent him our way. just don't expect him to become a miami 'canes fan. opens early june. 3157 commodore plaza. off main highway. 786.517.5299. www.christabellesquarter.com

eat the carne.
it might sound like a cross between the green guy who stole christmas and one of the fairy tale little people, but grimpa is actually a brazilian steakhouse, named for the part of the pine tree that gauchos traditionally used to start their campfires. this 2-story, 300-seater comes to us courtesy of curitiba city, grimpa's home base, where it was voted "best steakhouse" by veja magazine guide. opens late june. 901 south miami avenue. in mary brickell village. 305.416.9355. www.grimpa.com

pass the limoncello.
danny devito's name is on the marquee, sure, but don't mistake this one for just another tax break. the lilliputian actor teamed up with restaurateur david manero, a giant in the biz (palm beach's vic & angelo's, plus gotham city and shore before he sold the latter two). translation in rhyme: italian fare in your gob, as serious as a hit from the mob. opens mid-june. 150 ocean drive. in between first and second streets. 305.531.0911. www.devitosouthbeach.com
