backward is the new forward. at least when it comes to nails. the reverse french manicure is an edgier version of the old classic. jean harlow, the original blonde bombshell is credited with pioneering this bold look in the 1930s. this side of the 21st century, dita von teese, everyone's favorite burlesque performer, has been flaunting it for years (the manicure we mean), and the directionally challenged styling was recently spotted on the tracy reese runway (pictured left).

designers and fashion photographers have been requesting it on their models for decades, according to sandra hop, celebrity stylist at warren tricomi salons in new york city, because it symbolizes the "cosmopolitan, influential woman." but it's not just for the glossies anymore. while the masses have yet to catch on, actresses meryl streep and catherine deneuve have rocked the topy-turvy-mani.

ready to make the switch? simply paint the half moon part of the nail light instead of the free edge. but don't trust just anybody. hop recommends going to high-end salons that are more familiar with the up, er, upside down and coming.
