how about this for a novel idea? an art gallery where people actually buy art. this past weekend at the silas marder gallery in bridgehampton, sold dots, er, dotted the walls at the opening of "the big show."
silas marder is crazy. he just wants you to be able to appreciate and own art, even if you live in a studio or freeload on someone's sun porch. to prove it, he gave 50 artists each three 8"X10" canvases to do with as they pleased. the results now hang in marder's fanciful barn. over the past two years he's renovated the barnhouse to create a lively space (not another home for droning art snobs).
artwork by artists from europe, japan, and mexico join works by local artists who are starting to get attention, like grant haffner, mica invisible marder, and oliver peterson. one of the concepts of the show is to offer accessible art to people who might not already be collectors (the canvases start at $300), and to hang the up-and-coming artists next to established ones like dennis leri and dennis oppenheim.
who knows? you might come away from your next trip to the beach with more than a sunburn (no, we mean a painting).
