new to town

there's a new rooftop pool in the meatpacking district and it's not at the soho house. come just a few days, the new hotel gansevoort will officially open its doors to new york.

you may have spotted this modern 187-roomer on the corner of ninth ave and 13th street with its zinc-colored metal panels and glass-sheathed balconies. hotelier henry kallan (owner of the library and giraffe hotels), recruited former bryant parker elon kenchington as the new gm - and launched into the 'hood with distressed leather furniture, translucent glass doors and the new glass-surrounded rooftop pool that happens to sport underwater music. and in just a short time, restaurateur jeffrey chodorow will join the hotel with his new neighborhood japanese - ono .

back in 1808, the only fort ever erected in greenwich village, fort gansevoort, was built on the hudson (named after general peter gansevoort, a revolutionary war hero). if only he knew that almost 200 years later - the area would host an even bigger one - sort of.
