Enjoy hearty fare and a pint at the self-proclaimed first "gastro-tavern" on Capitol Hill, Boxcar Tavern. Choose from a lighter salad or sandwich, or go all in for a "Tavern Fare" dish, like Welsh rarebit, country pate, or a main course of wild boar stew. The rib-sticking cuisine is balanced out by a sizable menu of draft brews to wash it all down. If you're counting carbs, there are also inventive cocktails to choose from, like the Perfect Smoking Jacket (scotch, port, vermouth, and blood orange bitters). The structure (whose name was inspired by the railroad style setup), is decked out in warm tones, with mahogany and maple trim, banquette and picnic table seating, and gas-lit lanterns. Don't be afraid to get a little messy; there are no white tablecloths in sight. --Toni Kervina
